Columbus Georgia

Columbus History and Culture

As one of the last frontier towns of the original Thirteen Colonies, the City of Columbus GA was established in 1828 as a trading outpost with the express purpose of strengthening Georgia’s western borderline and establishing trade along the Chattahoochee River.  Notable topographical features include steep slopes in the north that transition into level terrain in the south with a number of streams and creeks which flow into and out of the Chattahoochee River.

With the establishment of Fort Benning Army Base in 1918 to the South, and the Alabama state line so close in the West, subsequent growth of the city ensued mainly to the North and East.  Over the years textiles and soldiering were two of the town’s major economic staples, and Columbus became a center for shipping as well as military manufacturing.  With a moderate climate, and encompassing 140,000 acres of land, the things to do in Columbus Georgia are quite numerous, with recreational activities which can be accessed by Columbus home owners year round.

In central Columbus is the historic district known as Uptown Columbus, with many residential, commercial and public historic buildings that have been renovated while keeping a keen eye on historic detail and accuracy.  The character and charm are quite unique, with streetscapes that take one back to an era long gone but much remembered.

With hot venues such as Springer Opera House and RiverCenter for the Performing Arts, Uptown is known as the entertainment destination of the entire area.  There are no end of Columbus attractions for locals to enjoy year-round such as Market Days on Broadway, the Uptown Yard Sale, the Uptown Concert Series, and the annual art show Arts on the River.  A variety of restaurants offer unique dining experiences, enjoy the ambiance of an outdoor cafe, or the warmth of a pizza parlor with live music, ramble along the RiverWalk, and experience the art of shopping for everything from the latest fashions to home improvement stores.
